Struggling With Acne? Look Into The Makeup Your Using!

Struggling with Acne? Look Into Makeup

Struggling with acne personally, I can tell you that most of the market targets skin care as the only thing to look into when healing and managing acne. I believe from personal experience think healthy skin is more that a skin care routine, it takes effort from all aspects of your daily routine from food, hair products, makeup and so much more. Find out more here. Today we are going to dive into makeup and how you could unintentionally be causing unwanted acne. Before beginning always make sure to patch test before applying to entire face. While most of the time you patch test on the inside of your wrist or elbow, if your going to get acne, you won't know until it's on your face. Here are my tips; Patch test on the inside of your wrist or elbow before applying to face. If no reaction apply a small amount to an acne prone spot on your face, after a few uses is no acne or irritation safe to use on entire face. Dealing with acne is bad enough, so to save you money always try to sample before purchasing full size makeup. Not all products targeted safe for acne prone skin are truly acne approved. Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for samples.

Makeup Doesn't Cause Acne, Ingredients do!

This is super important to understand, acne is caused by clogged pores, allowing bacteria to buildup resulting in pimples. Understanding what your skin doesn't like is going to be very beneficial to you at this time. Most makeup is created to be used on all skin types, but with acne prone not every products is going to work. When searching out primers and liquid foundations, be sure to look to non comedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores. Keep in mind that just because something say non comedogenic, doesn't mean it won't cause your acne. I have come to realize that Aloe causes a lot of problems for me when dealing with acne and most primers on the market are aloe based.

Here is an example of ingredients from Clove + Hallow (clean brand) and Mac (not clean)

You can see with this one the cleaner primer had more ingredients, but they are all clean whereas the Mac primers have less ingredients that are toxic and harmful to the skin and body. Hopefully by now you can understand where I am going and see the difference. Makeup should be free of any toxins, sulfates, talc, fragrance and mineral oils. Keep in mind a few things when looking into makeup, just because it is a clean brand doesn't mean its truly clean, a product that worked for someone else doesn't mean it will work for you, quality ingredients matters and remember less is more. My favorite motto is skin care first, makeup second, smile always! Love your skin:) Here are a few more tips about makeup and acne:

  • Wash brushes or sponges after each use and do a deep clean once a week.
  • Mineral concealer and foundation is the safest choice as it sits on top of the skin not allowing pores to become clogged.
  • Washing alone doesn't remove makeup! Always remove makeup first then wash your face! My advice is to use a oil cleanser to remove makeup and then your nightly cleanser after. Two oil cleanser I recommend are *True Botanicals Pre-Cleansing Oil $48 and Mad Hippie Cleansing Oil $17.99
  • When looking at ingredients, select the ingredient that you may not be familiar with and search google. Do you research and see what the ingredient is, where is comes from and how safe it is to be used on the body. The website ewg.org is a great resource.
  • Your makeup should chosen on how it works for you and your skin, the finished look, ingredients that you understand and within your budget.
