Is Your Sunscreen Protecting You and Our Planet?
Sunscreen, your skin's protection from the sun's rays. U.V. Rays may not only cause sunburn, but they also bring ago spots, premature wrinkles and skin cancer. Did you know that 20% of us will have some form of skin cancer in our lifetime. Finding a sunscreen that protects both your skin and our planet is no easy task. Before I spill the beans about the sunscreen line that is certified natural and reef safe, let's talk about why all sunscreens are not created equal!
There are two types of sunscreen on the market; chemical based and mineral based. Chemical based sunscreens contain one or multiply of oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. Unfortunately oxybenzone is used about 65% of the time and is the most damaging. Oxybenzone can cause hormone disruption, skin irritation, burning skin, blisters and is linked to the bleaching of the coral reef.
The reason it is called bleaching of the coral reef is because the vivid colors you see are actually microscopic algae. Oxybenzone has caused the coral to reject the algae and in turn the algae that created all those pretty colors dies leaving the coral white. Marine eco-systems need the coral reef as it provides a home, shelter and food to the local marine life. Without the reef the marine life loses their food source and shelter causing a chain reaction. Each year the reef absorbs 14,000 tons of toxins causing severe damage. With the ocean threatened and your skin under attack I think it is safe to say let's ditch the chemicals.
Once those chemical sunscreens are ditched, switch to a mineral based sunscreen. The two minerals to look for are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Zinc oxide is a the safest and most effective active ingredient in sunscreen. It is a powdered mineral that sits on top of your skin protecting it from the UVA & UVB rays. Avoid titanium dioxide in a spray or powdered form as it can cause problems if inhaled. When looking at the minerals always make sure they are non-nano minerals as anything else will absorb into your skin, not sit on top. Mineral based sunscreens are also reef safe!
Hawaii has become the first state to ban chemical based sunscreen as it has seen a 40% decline in the coral reef's since 2011. Trying to minimize the impact any farther on the Hawaiian reef's Raw Elements has teamed up with the Hawaiian Airlines on a reef preservation initiative. Raw Elements is certified natural, non-gmo, non-nano, titanium free, cruelty free, reef safe, UVA & UVB, and made in the USA sunscreen company. Their entire line is broad spectrum, water resistance, biodegradable, safe for all ages, hypoallergenic, never runs or stings eyes, and is made with natural and organic ingredients. Raw Elements is the sunscreen company that is forcing change, not reacting to it! Are you ready to get start protecting your skin and our planet? Check out their entire line here.
