Non-Toxic Cold/Flu Guide
That time of year has come back around that usually brings on colds and flu. The last thing we want to do when feeling miserable is make ourselves feel worse. The hidden truth is that what your reach for during the time of illness can help or make you feel worse. Most of the time the over the counter options are filled with sugars, dyes and medicine that is only masking the problem, not really doing anything to help it. What if I told you that it is beneficial for the body to fight off infection and during this time managing the symptoms that are going to both sooth but also boost your immune support. I have personally tired and tested all these recommendation on myself and children.
Sore Throat & Cough: First sign of a sore throat start increasing your immune support. Organic Elderberry, Raw Honey, Lemons and Garlic. If you can stomach it mince a glove of fresh garlic or 1/2 teaspoon of minced garlic in the jar, add garlic to 6 oz of filtered water, juice from a fresh squeezed lemon and 1/2 teaspoon of fresh grated ginger, 1/8-1/4 teaspoon of powdered ginger. Stir until blended and chug down. Give yourself 30 mins to relax as garlic can cause nausea but the ginger is added to help combat that. It passes in about 30 mins but remember your going to a little garlicky smelling! Elderberry is packed with antioxidants and vitamins support your immune system. For the kids I get the Gaia Herbs Kids Elderberry Syrup and for myself and husband I get the Garden of Life MyKind Organics Elderberry Gummies. For a soothing drink to help relief the pain and alleviate coughing mix your favorite organic tea, fresh squeezed lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of Raw Honey. Gargle twice a day with warm filtered water and pink sea salt.
Runny Nose: Beside being so irritating, they can cause an irritated nose from nonstop rubbing. One of the easiest things I love to do for the kids and myself is place them in the bathroom with the door shut and the shower running on super hot, add 8 drops of organic peppermint essential oil and 5 drops of organic lavender essential oil to the ledge of the shower and inhale deeply for 5-10 minutes. Blow your nose after and during to get all it out. A way to combat the nose irritation plus save money from buying Kleenex is using washable hankies. Use old shirts and cut into squares, place them in a jar marked hankies with a jar next to it for the used hankies. Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to the bottom of the jar to give them a mint scent.
Head and Chest Congestion: Sinus pressure is not fun, it's it painful and leaves your feeling miserable. Following the same shower procedure as stated in the runny nose section but add organic eucalyptus essential oil to the shower also. Do not use eucalyptus on children under 6 years old. Drink tea like stated in the sore throat section and create a facial roller with a carrier oil and essential oils.
Facial Sinus Relief
1 oz Carrier Oil (since its going on my face I like to stick to oils that are non-comedogenic like hemp. Check out our list of oils and there comedogenic rating here)
36 drops of three essential oils. Some choices are lemon, eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint, lavender, tea tree, mint. My favorite combination is 16 drops eucalyptus, 10 drops peppermint, 5 drops tea tree and 5 drops lavender. Replacing the eucalyptus with rosemary for children under 6 years old.
Stir together and store in a dark cool place tightly covered. Placing in the fridge adds an extra cooling effect that feels so good on a pounding head.
Shake or stir before using, close your eyes and inhale, exhale and really relax. Roll or rub the relief oil over your forehead, down your nose, under cheek bones, and down your neck over your throat and lymph nodes. Your relief is coming your way in under 15 mins, trust me I was shocked the first time I ever tired it. My choice for chest congestion is the same as the shower and then using the Badger Balm Chest rub on my chest and back. Crafted from organic and natural oils, essential oil blend and beeswax. Always free of petroleum, fragrances, dyes, parabens, synthetic, Gmo, artificial or harsh ingredients. Inhale a scent of eucalyptus and mint giving you relief from chest and nasals congestion! Safe for the whole family.
Ear Aches and/or Infections: My daughter suffered from so many ear infections that we finally ended up getting tubes put in her ears. Since tubes she hasn't had one infection so I will never change my decision about that. I always recommend talking to your doctor about tubes if your child is suffering month after month with at least 4 infections in 6 months. Repeated infections over and over can cause damage to the ear drum resulting in hearing loss. For the occasionally ear infection or ache garlic is my number one go to! Garlic not only reliefs the pain but fight the infection.A few ways I go about this is to place a peeled garlic clove in the ear like a cotton ball, allow it to rest there or sleep with it in. Piece the one side that is pressing onto the ear allow the garlic juice to drip into the ear. Lay with the garlic ear facing the ceiling. Another option is if you have a jar of minced garlic, soak up the juice onto a cotton round and place in ear and squeeze the cotton round to allow the juice to go into your ear. Lay with your garlic ear facing the ceiling. I also like to rub extra virgin oil mixed with tea tree and eucalyptus essential oil behind my ear and in front rubbing in a downward pull.
Always listen to your body and your children, get plenty of rest, drink water on repeat and keep your hands clean using our nontoxic foaming hand wash. Before taking over the counter options, read the labels and give the natural remedies a chance.
