When thinking of spring around here many things come to my mind. Flowers and trees begin to bloom, birds chirp again and the deep green grass becomes super soft. The fields begin to start getting turned over resulting in these beautiful rows of dark fresh soil. While all this beauty is stunning, one thing arrives every spring that is not beautiful, WEEDS! After hibernating all winter long they arrive and are growing out of control. Getting rid of them has become the spring time challenge. Most harsh chemical weed killer sprays do more harm then any good. The harmful chemicals in the sprays are bad for the environment and dangerous for pets and kids. These sprays contaminate the soil, causing the ph balance to go out of wack. This in turns gives you poor grass health and more weeds. Weeds thrive in low ph soil creating a never ending weed problem. Looking for more natural ways to to get rid of weeds I tried out three different methods and these are my results.
Hot Salt Water
As I tried not to scald myself with this huge pot of boiling water, I very carefully poured the water on the weeds in the cracks of the driveway. After 24 hours the were still there, although some of the weeds that had the water poured directly over them turned slightly brown. If you have a small area this would work okay. Not recommended if you have a large weeded area.
Pulling weeds out with your hands is the most natural way to get rid of weeds. Pulling the weeds straight up from the roots gives you immediate results. Getting the kids involved is a fun way to spend time together and getting rid of weeds at the same time! A fun game to play to have a race and see who can pull out the most weeds in a set time. The winner gets to choose dessert! Do this weekly to maintain a weed free area.
D.I.Y. Weed Killer Spay
After you try this you will never buy a chemical filled weed killer again! Not only is this super easy and cheap to make, it's safe to to use around areas that pet's and kid's may be. Under five minutes I had made a weed killer spray using natural ingredients that I already had in my pantry and the results were pretty impressive. After just a few short hours, the bright green weeds became dull and lifeless. That is all it took and I will never buy a chemical filled weed killer again.
I hope you are as excited I was making this for the first time. I would love to see your results and hear how you enjoyed not spraying harmful toxins around your yard!
